Berseh Food Centre
A long-established hawker centre at 166 Jalan Besar, Singapore 208877, serving the neighbourhood since 1975.
Berseh Food Centre houses 66 cooked-food stalls across two levels and forms part of the wider Jalan Besar district, an area known for its historic streetscape, conserved shophouses and long-standing mix of food, trade and community activity.
A Part of Jalan Besar’s History
The history of Berseh Food Centre is closely tied to the development of Jalan Besar.
The Jalan Besar area began as agricultural land and orchards before becoming increasingly urbanised in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. After the First World War, agricultural land gradually gave way to shophouses, workshops, eating houses and other commercial uses.
Today, much of the surrounding district retains a low-rise streetscape and a large collection of conserved shophouses, giving Berseh Food Centre a distinctive setting within one of Singapore’s older urban neighbourhoods.
Hawker Culture at Berseh
Since opening in 1975, Berseh Food Centre has been home to generations of hawkers serving a wide range of local dishes.
Over the years, some stalls have operated for decades, while others have closed, retired or been taken over by newer operators. This changing stall mix reflects the broader evolution of Singapore’s hawker culture, where traditional food businesses continue alongside newer generations of hawkers.
Several stalls within Berseh Food Centre have also received recognition from the Michelin Guide Singapore, including Bib Gourmand and Michelin-selected establishments.
